30 Hour Famine - Fredericksburg
Friday, fifteen from Heritage Free Will Baptist Church decided to go on a thirty-hour famine to raise awareness about world hunger. The Heritage Free Will Baptist Church Youth Group are learning about poverty and hunger that is devastating our world. Ask them, though, and they will tell you about the fun part, while the not so fun part was lunchtime in the school cafeteria.
The 30 hour famine began Friday morning, which means the teens of Heritage youth group had to go all day without eating anything. A task more difficult than you would think for a teenager. A church lock-in on Friday night found the fifteen participants at the alter several times praying for compassion in their own heart, for help to the children who are hurting. They prayed for those who invest time and money for those in need. They built their own homes from cardboard, a little wood, paper, and plastic. In the fellowship hall, they played team games, working together and helping each other.
On Saturday, after cleaning the church, they went to The Thurman Brisben Center in Fredericksburg. The emergency homeless shelter provides programs and services to assist individuals and families who are at risk of becoming homeless or who have recently become homeless. There, the Heritage students ministered to children as they, still without food, brought craft and art projects to bless their lives. Even without food for over 30 hours, grace of the Lord and the world hunger cause kept our students from being consumed by thoughts of their own desires.
Finally, after cleaning up the craft area, our participants broke the fast, sharing pizza and enjoying each other's company. We are thankful that, so far, the Lord has used Heritage Students to raise $800 to help these children. The 30 Hour Famine - Fredericksburg was quite a blessing for us, and now will be a blessing for others. The contributions are enough to feed a child for over two years! God bless those who participated, prayed and sponsored!
The video below, shows how some students went to see how the money they raised was being used. Soon, they will be taking applications for the 2011 study tour.
